Materium produces a low density silica (SiO2) additive which can be incorporated in all kinds of polymer matrices. Our microcapsules are available in diameter range of 1 um to 70 um range of sizes and densities are from 0.1 g/mL to 0.3 g/mL based on your needs. These microspheres can also be functionnalized with the molecules of your choice to meet your specific requirements.

Our additive advantages

Low density

As a feather weight, this additive is extremely light yet has a solid core. Our silica (SiO2) microspheres reduce the weight of plastics, composites, rubbers, textiles…

The hollow sphere reduces the density of your polymeric material. Our product has a density as low 0.1 g/ml. That is 10 X lighter than water.

Mechanial properties

Adding silica to any type of plastic (polyolefin, nylon, polyvinyl) or resin (phenolic, vynilic, epoxy, polyester)  increases the mechanical performance of the final material.

It increases:

Insulation

Our microcapsules are hollow silica particles. They act as an air bubble with a hard core of silica.

The capsule has good insulation properties:

  • Thermal
  • Electrical

Fire properties

Silica (SiO2) additives are known to increase fire resistance and lower the smoke.

  • Fire resistant: Hollow silica capsules are stable in high temperatures (> 1500C)
  • Low smoke: The additive is non-toxic and has low smoke below 1500C.
Cost reduction

Being  extremely light weight, the addition of our silica (SiO2) microcapsules to polymer materials can help to save money  on transport.

Also, the density reduction offers an eco-friendly product with greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions. It has a huge environmental impact for the transportation industry.

Stabilizer effect

The additives (silica capsules)  can slow down polymer degradation caused by UV and heat. Other properties like anti-blocking, anti-fogging and nucleating effects can also be obtained by incorporating our silica microcapsules into polymer material.

Non-toxic
